Kathryn A. (Kathy) Hughes, MD, FACS is a board certified General Surgeon who has spent the majority of her career in private practice/community hospitals. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. She is active in organized medicine and professional societies including: the Association of Women Surgeons, serving on the Executive Committee of the Massachusetts Chapter; The American Society of Breast Surgeons, serving the organization as Alternate Delegate to the AMA; the American Medical Association; and the Massachusetts Medical Society, serving as Vice-President of the Essex North District, member of the House of Delegates, and Vice-Chair of the Committee on Women in Medicine.
She has been active throughout her career on numerous hospital committees, and has held hospital leadership positions including Chief of Surgery (several hospitals), as well as Medical Executive Committee including Vice-President of Medical Staff. These organizations and positions have fostered and developed her interest and expertise in leadership and advocacy, medical ethics, and quality/peer review, in addition to her clinical interests and practice.
She is a writer and blogger, with a special interest in physicians and surgeons on social media, and advocacy promoting women in science, medicine, and surgery. She has given numerous talks and lectures, to both colleagues and for community events, and has appeared on radio and local television.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Holyoke College, graduating Magna cum Laude with a degree in Biochemistry. She obtained her MD from The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, DC. Her Post-graduate Surgical training began in the University of Nevada School of Medicine system, before transferring back to Washington, DC to complete her surgical training at The George Washington University Hospital program.
In addition, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, reading, movies, music (eclectic taste), photography, athletics/sports, nature and the outdoors, cooking/food&wine, and she loves dogs.
